The Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is the certificate that students in the Ontario province of Canada receive upon graduation.
To qualify for the OSSD, a student must have completed 18 credits in subjects such as English, Math, Science, Canadian History, and French as a second language.
Students need to complete 18 credits in compulsory subjects such as English, Math, Science, Canadian history, and French as a second language.
Students also complete 12 credits in subjects of their own choosing, which allow them to focus their learning in areas that they are passionate about.
Students have to achieve a literacy test score of 75% or more.
Students need to complete 40 hours of community service as part of the graduation requirements.
An OSSD is received at the end of Year 12, and is recognized in all other Canadian provinces, and around the world. Universities require a valid and complete OSSD to consider applications from students who studied in Ontario. The OSSD is held in high regard around the world. Universities in Canada and around the world usually look at student’s performance in their top 6 subjects when considering applications.
Students can begin their high school studies in another system and convert to OSSD at a later stage to achieve an OSSD diploma.
